The Sweetest Supply Chain: UCARGO on World Chocolate Day

Today is World Chocolate Day! (7th July! lest we ever forget)

…and while most people will mark it with a square or two, we can’t help seeing the journey behind the bar.

Chocolate is one of the most logistically demanding treats in global trade. The cocoa supply chain begins in West Africa, where the majority of the world’s cocoa is grown. Côte d’Ivoire is the single largest producer, harvesting across two seasons each year before the beans begin a journey of thousands of miles… by road, by port, and above all by sea, to processors and markets around the world.

It’s a temperature-sensitive, time-sensitive agricultural commodity crossing oceans on a schedule. Which, as it happens, is exactly the kind of cargo our Fresh Produce team lives and breathes. Chocolate doesn’t reach the shelf by magic: behind every bar sits an intricate chain of origin handling, controlled conditions and careful timing. The journey behind your favourite treat is the kind of journey we understand.

There’s a sweeter reason the day resonates around here, too. UCARGO has its own resident chocolate visionary,  a director with something of a golden touch, and the bars we hand round the office happen to be Tony’s Chocolonely, a brand built on cleaning up the cocoa supply chain. A happy coincidence of names, and a mission anyone in global logistics can respect.

We’ve even started sending our own UCARGO chocolate “consignments” out into the world…miniature branded bars, because we couldn’t resist. Small, sweet, and very much on-brand.

So this World Chocolate Day, enjoy the square. But spare a thought for the extraordinary journey that got it to you; from a pod on a farm in West Africa to the moment it melts.
