UCARGO is proud to have sponsored a set of the award-winning Barney and Echo Mindfulness educational resources for the pupils of Wrotham Road Primary School here in Gravesend.

Delivered by the Police Community Clubs of Great Britain, an organisation run by serving and retired police officers . The Barney and Echo series is designed to support parents and teachers in addressing Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) at Key Stages 1 and 2. The books follow Barney Eagle and Echo Squirrel through Treetop Forest, tackling a different social issue in each title through stories, activities and classroom discussion.

The Mindfulness title focuses on mental health and wellbeing, encouraging children to be open about how they feel and teaching them that looking after their minds is just as important as looking after their bodies. The resources are interactive, punctuated by activities that reinforce the learning objectives, and can be used in lesson time or as homework.

Wrotham Road Primary is just a short walk from our head office on Windmill Street, and supporting the next generation of pupils at a school on our doorstep felt like a natural thing to do. Early intervention genuinely matters, the evidence shows that engaging with children on issues like mental health, resilience and citizenship at primary age helps them grow into confident, capable young people.

We’d like to thank Kelly Griffiths and the Barney and Echo team for the work they do, and we hope the pupils and teachers at Wrotham Road enjoy working through the series. It’s also a timely reminder for us as adults; mindfulness and looking after our mental health isn’t something we learn once as children and tick off. It’s something we all have to stay conscious of, keep practising, and be willing to talk about, whatever stage of life we’re at.
